HomeBlogBest Video Settings on the Sony a7S III Setting up your cameras is one of the most important parts of being prepared and able to shoot quickly and effectively. Sony cameras especially since I think it’s fair to say their menu system could use some more work. There are also just so many settings to dig into when you start to navigate things like Picture Profiles or even just custom button functions. Filmmaker Matti Haapoja has long been a Sony shooter and he is here to share his tips and tricks for getting the best video settings. This should work with any relatively recent release, including the a7S III, a7 IV, and FX3. Among the best and most overlooked settings on Sony cameras are the custom settings being saved to the mode dial. You can very quickly switch between different modes for different purposes just by rotating the dial. Matti’s examples are having Custom Mode 1 set up for vlogging, 2 set for slow motion at 120p, and 3 set for max slow motion at 240p. These modes save everything, including white balance, shutter speed, picture profile, and more. I’m sure you already have ideas for your own just make sure you have all your basics covered Set camera to base ISO 640 and 12,800 for a7S III & FX3 Shoot wide open or as close to it as possible Shutter speed double frame rate 24 fps = 1/50 second White balance either daylight or auto depending on most common shooting situations Image Credit Sony Codecs get a little more complex on newer cameras. XAVC S is your more standard compression with Long GOP and Easy to use and fairly compressed. There is also now XAVC S-I, which is intra-frame and still meaning much higher quality and still easy to edit but much larger files. Finally, there is XAVC HS, a new high-efficiency codec using compression. High quality with smaller files. The only concern is that you should have is that you need a newer computer that has hardware decoding or it’ll kill your top quality you should double check the recording modes to ensure you have a decent bit rate and definitely want to make sure you are at 10-bit 422. That will be the biggest thing to guarantee top quality. Matti also shows off some of his own LUTs if you are interested. There are plenty of LUTs out there to help convert S-Log3 to something that looks great without much work at all. As for color, you will want to think about what Picture Profile you are planning on using. It’s fairly well established that for maximum quality and dynamic range you should stick with S-Log3 if you are recording in 10-bit. The flat profile is designed to squeeze the most amount of dynamic range and color information into the compressed codecs allowing you to recover extra details in the shadows or highlights that a baked-in look can’t give you. You just have to account for post-production color grading as part of your workflow. Image Credit Sony There is the alternate S-Log2 mode which Matti describes as a more conservative version of S-Log3. But still, best is to make some modifications to the S-Log3 profile. Starting with the default S-Log3 profile in PP8 you should head to the Color Mode spec. Change it to S-Cinetone. Now, S-Cinetone is a good profile if you want something quick and ready to go and it has tweaked colors that make it a great color mode. Best practice is still to use S-Log3 if you can. Other adjustments include taking the Saturation all the way up to +15. This supposedly helps with color grading as the extra information is easier to work with as opposed to the normal low saturation log gamma. It easy to remove saturation if you need to anyway. Another thing to check out is detail. By bringing it from -7 up to -1 you are capturing enough detail that you don’t always have to add it in post which can be a very heavy edit. There are some good tweaks here I might just start using some myself. Any particular tweaks you like to make to your settings? HomeBlogSetting Up the Sony a7 IV for Video Even though Sony’s mirrorless cameras have incredible video specs we can’t forget that at their heart they are still based on stills-centric ideals. The a7 IV is the latest to join the full-frame lineup and has some notable improvements if you plan on shooting video. However, you will quickly learn that there are quirks to using a mirrorless camera for video. There are so many settings to learn about and make sure are set just right if you hope to get cinema-quality video out of the a7 IV. For a jumpstart on what settings, you should use this video from Harv Video/Audio Stuff will do the trick. One thing that still hasn’t changed with Sony mirrorless is that there is the potential for overheating. You can help the situation by changing the Auto Power Shut Off Temp to High. This will keep you going for a fair bit longer without any real negative side effects. Harv was able to go from around 20 minutes to well over an hour by making this simple will want to customize the buttons. Harv has the following Custom 1 Focus Magnifier Custom 2 White Balance Custom 3 My Menu Custom 4/Trash Picture Profiles Wheel ISO Set how you need but these are all very helpful settings to have in set for quick access. Diving into the My Menu, you will want to tweak this a fair bit. Harv filled it up with some of the options that you don’t necessarily need to change often enough to have a button for it but that you want to find quickly. Things like Monitor/Finder, file format, movie settings, and format cards. You might also want to add the Super 35mm of, the Super 35mm mode is an incredibly useful feature. You can quickly punch in while still shooting in 4K resolution to use APS-C lenses or getting more mileage out of your lenses. There are some slight downsides in image quality, but it is very good. Image Credit Sony Gamma Display Assist is almost needed if you want to use the rear display at all. You can’t monitor well in S-Log without it. For codec, there are a ton more options. There is XAVC HS for high compression and high quality with though it’ll be toughest on your computer. XAVC S is medium compression and medium quality using and will be a lot easier on your computer. And last is XAVC S-I, which is an All-I format, meaning they are larger and higher quality files that are easier on your computer. Pick your poison, though I prefer XAVC S-I for quality and ease of use despite the file sizes. A new mode is a Breathing Compensation setting which can digitally account for breathing in many Sony lenses. It’s a cool feature that actually works very well though it will crop slightly. Make sure you spend the time to tweaks settings between your stills and video modes. The camera can save settings between modes, so if you are switching between the modes you can do it via the Different Set for Still/Movie menu and select which things you don’t want to stay the same between them. Anything he missed? This is a fairly comprehensive overview of the Sony a7 IV’s various settings and menu options. For example, the European current works at 50Hz, and this is why PAL is calibrated at 50Hz. If you switch to NTSC, you’re switching to a 60Hz mode which can cause banding or flickering in your image. In this case, changing the shutter speed may help but make sure to do some tests A7 III, A7R III, A9 Video Time LimitFor a long time, digital cameras were limited to a maximum of 30 minutes of recording time per clip. The reason was to avoid overheating problems, and the extra tax that would label the camera as a camcorder notably in Europe.Recently, manufactures have started to lift the 30 minute limit on their products. Sony has done it with recent APS-C models and the A7R ModelMax. Duration / ClipA7, A7R, A7 II, A7R II, A7 III, A7R III, A930 minA7R IVunlimitedSony A7 III, A7R III, A9 4K Video SettingsWhen it comes to video quality, and particularly the quality of 4K video, it is important to understand how the camera works to ensure the best explained above, the dimension of 4K is 3840×2160 pixels. An easy calculation tells us that it corresponds to a resolution of 8 megapixels. In other words, to produce 4K footage, you need a sensor with at least sensors on Sony E-mount cameras offer a higher resolution, from 12MP to 60MP depending on the specific model. These sensors with the exception of the A7S series are designed for still photography first, where a high resolution matters more. So how exactly does your Sony camera cope with the extra pixels on the sensor when recording video?Sony A7 III, A9 Video Crop FactorFirst of all, the sensor on your A7 has a 32 aspect ratio, but video works with a 169 aspect ratio. So when you record movies, the camera doesn’t use the upper and lower parts of the 12MP and 24MP sensors, your Sony does what we call a full pixel readout or oversampling. It uses all the pixels available on the 169 surface and then downscales or downsamples the data to match the 4K example, the A7 III has a sensor with 24MP. When recording video, it uses approximately 20MP, which corresponds to 6K, and then downscales to 8MP 4K. Using more pixels to create the 4K video results in crisper the original sizeThe ability of a camera to perform full pixel readout is linked to its processor speed, which means the capability to read all the pixels while also handling resolution, frame rate, recording time, autofocus, and image processing. For example the Sony A7S II has a 12MP sensor, and the camera is powerful enough to process all the data on the 169 surface at any frame the camera can’t handle all the data, it has to reduce the amount of information to process and there are different ways to do that. One method is to use a smaller portion of the sensor. This results in a sensor crop, which makes your field of view the case of the Sony A7 III and A9, the full width of the sensor is used when recording 4K at 24p or 25p, whereas a crop is applied when recording at with Full HD, there is no crop on the sensor regardless of the frame rate A7R III, A7R IV APS-C Mode for VideoWith cameras that feature a higher resolution such as the A7R III 42MP or A7R IV 64MP, full pixel readout across the entire width of the sensor isn’t manageable because there is too much information to avoid cropping and change the field of view, they do what we call line skipping. As the name suggests, they ignore lines of pixels so that there is less data to process. This results in a loss of sharpness, and some aliasing appearing in the footageFull pixel readout all the pixels are usedLine skipping a selection of rows and/or columns of pixels are not that this image is a simplified simulation, the algorithm and pattern can be more you want to record with the best quality on the A7R II, A7R III or A7R IV, you need to activate the APS-C mode. That way, the camera uses the central portion of the frame crop and can read all the pixels approximately 18MP when recording 4K video at 24, 25 or 30p. Full pixel readout also reduces noise at high like the A7 III and A9 can also record with an APS-C crop and full pixel readout. The reasons you may want to do this are a if you want to use an APS-C lens, or b if you want a narrower field of view with your full frame the video below, you can see an example with the A7 III and A7R III where we compare sharpness in full frame mode oversampling for the A7, line skipping for the A7R and APS-C mode oversampling for both. What about the quality in Full HD?When recording in 1080p, I consistently find the quality to be below average. There is a big loss in detail and often visible aliasing. I’m not exactly sure which method is used to create the footage, but since there is no crop on the sensor regardless of the frame rate used, I suspect it is line-skipping. I believe the only cameras that suffers less from this are the A7S and A7S to open a larger versionSony A7 III, A7R III Slow Motion SettingsRecent Sony cameras have a dedicated setting to create Full HD slow motion video in camera. To find out more about this, please visit our article A7 III, A7R III, A9 Exposure Settings for VideoJust as with still photography, you can work in manual or semi-automatic exposure mode when recording video. The four options available are the sameProgram Auto P aperture and shutter speed are chosen by the camera automatically, ISO is manualAperture Priority A shutter speed is automatic, aperture and ISO are manualShutter Priority S shutter speed and ISO are manual, aperture is automaticManual Exposure M shutter speed, aperture and ISO must be set manuallyWhen it comes to video, there are two ways to set first is to work in still mode with any of the P, S, A and M modes selectable from the main dial on top. When you press the record button, the camera will instantly go to video mode, start to record and apply the exposure settings you selected. This is useful if you need to capture a mix of stills and videos and you don’t need to separate exposure settings and other things such as custom second method is to set the camera to Movie mode with the same dial on top film icon. This gives you the advantage of using custom buttons that you have configured separately for video, or use different exposure modes for stills and video. To check which exposure mode is enabled however, you need to look in the to Camera Settings 2 / Movie 1 page 1/9Enter Exposure Mode and select one of the four options the A7 I and A7 II series, this setting is called exposure triangle aperture, shutter speed and ISO is based on the same principle as for stills so I’m not going to delve into this the web is full of articles and tutorials. One thing you need to keep in mind however is the shutter speed is different than for you want to set a shutter speed value that is inversely proportional to your frame rate. For exampleif you record at 25fps, use 1/50sif you record at 50fps, select 1/100sThese settings will ensure that the motion blur of your video appears you decrease the shutter speed 1/10s for example, the blur on each frame will be more severe and the movement in your video will appear blurry. If you increase the shutter speed for example 1/500s, each frame will be sharper but as a result, the playback of your video will look choppy and less is why, when recording video, I advise you to work in Manual mode, or Shutter Speed priority at the very least, so that you can control your settings more problem with using a shutter speed such as 1/50s is that if you’re working in daylight outside, you’re going to need ND filters to reduce the amount of light going through the lens. To be honest with you, I’ve used faster shutter speeds when I didn’t have any other choice, and if there isn’t too much movement in the frame, the result isn’t terrible. Still, it is definitely an important rule to keep in A7 III, A7R III, A9 Low Light Video SettingsDealing with low light situations when recording video is similar to still photography with one difference concerning shutter speed once can use a fast aperture lens but you can’t decrease the shutter speed below 1/25s or you’ll end up with too much motion good alternative is to raise the ISO level to brighten your image by pressing the right button of the rear control A7S II has the best signal to noise performance at high ISOs thanks to the lower megapixel count of its sensor. You can use it up to 25600 ISO without losing too much quality, and even 51200 ISO can be A7 III does very well too and I can confidently push it up to 6400 or 12800 ISO. The A7R III and A7R IV are a bit below in terms of performance and ideally, you want to stick around 3200 ISO. You will also get better results by switching to the APS-C is a recap of Sony’s camera sensitivity for videoMin. ISOMax. Generally, a profile with more contrast and darker black levels will look better, whereas a flat profile like S-Log2 can show a lot of noise in the dark zones if the exposure is not bright enough. Read more about video profiles further A7 III, A7R III Zebra Setting for VideoThere are various modes to monitor the exposure on your A7 camera when recording first method, and the most natural, is to simply observe the LCD monitor. The camera previews the exposure in real time so you can see if the scene is too dark or too second method is to use metering. The camera indicates if the scene is over or underexposed according to the metering mode selected.
